Roaming Around Rome

With so much information on the Internet about Rome, and Italy, we will limit our info here to pertinent information you might need to roam around Rome, namely to travel to and from Rome with Purpose.

Arriving at the airport

If your flight arrangements were made by Rome with Purpose, you will arrive with the rest of the group. However, Murphy has found his way even to Italy, so there are sometimes delays or travel complications that would hinder us from meeting you at the airport. For that reason, we will explain below how to get to the Rome with Purpose campus with a taxi or shuttle, though under normal circumstances, we will meet you at the Leonardo di Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO).

Once you have landed and gotten your luggage, here are a few helpful suggestions:

  • Unless you are stopped by the uniformed guards, do not stop at customs. Just follow the crowd out to the waiting area.
  • There will be a lot of activity on the other side of the doors. Take your time and look for the Rome with Purpose representative who will be holding a “Rome with Purpose” sign and will also be looking for you. Once everyone is accounted for, the group will travel together to campus.

Taxi

You can catch a taxi to the Rome with Purpose campus. From FCO to the Convent expect to pay about €40-50.

Once you have your taxi:

  • Tell the driver that you want to go to Via Casilina, 235. The convent has a metal gate. Ask the driver to wait while you ring the buzzer and ask for entrance.
  • The gate is staffed from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. only.
  • If you arrive after 11 p.m. please call our mobile number (which we will send you before you leave the US).
  • Do not ring the bell before 7 a.m. or after 11 p.m.

Airport Shuttle

You can book a shuttle at the airport. However, it is best to arrange for a shuttle in advance over the Internet rather than subject yourself to having to find a taxi once you land.

  • One option is Rome Airport Shuttle (about €18)
  • Other options include Roma Shuttle and AirPort Shuttle (fees vary)
  • If you have arranged for a shuttle beforehand, once you exit baggage claim, look for a person holding a sign with your name on it. Make sure that you have your shuttle confirmation paperwork handy. Sometimes planes land earlier than the shuttle companies anticipate, so just wait until the driver arrives. If you don’t meet up with the driver after 30-45 minutes, find the shuttle′s desk at the airport.

Train

Trains run every 30 minutes to and from FCO (approximately €14 one way). Once you exit Baggage Claim, look for the signs directing you to the airport′s train station. Once at the station, you can purchase a ticket for the train at the Trenitalia desk or at one of the Biglietti Veloce self-service machines with a credit card or cash. Take the train in the direction of Roma Termini (this will take you to Rome′s main bus/train station). Follow the instructions for Public Transportation Connections from Roma Termini.

At Termini you will need to purchase a metro/bus ticket and then find a small train just outside of the station building (Giardinetti).  Take the train to the Sant’ Elena stop. Alternately, you can take Bus #105. Tell the driver you want to get off at the Sant’ Elena stop. When you exit the train or bus, you will need to cross the street (Casilina) and then turn right. Go approximately 50 yards to #235. Ring the buzzer to enter. If it is before 7 a.m. or after 11 p.m., please call our mobile number (available before you leave the US) instead of pressing the buzzer.
